Vision Correction in South Florida: Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach

In addition to LASIK surgery, we also provide the latest in intraocular lens implantation, LASEK, and other laser vision correction services to South Florida residents of Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach.

Intraocular Lens Implantation

We offer intraocular lens implantation at our Boca Raton practice as an alternative to LASIK and custom LASIK procedures. An intraocular lens (IOL) is a clear plastic lens that is used to enhance or replace the eye’s natural lens. IOLs have been proven to be an effective treatment for cataracts and common visual defects such as myopia (nearsightedness). At the Cohen Laser and Vision Center, we use four advanced types of IOLs: the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL, STAAR ICL™, ReSTOR® IOL, and Advanced Medical Optics ReZoom™ IOL.

Verisyse™ Phakic Intraocular Lens

Implantation of the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is a procedure intended for patients 21 years and older who suffer from moderate to severe cases of myopia. After an incision is made in the eye, the intraocular lens is gently inserted and attached to the iris. With the new lens in place, the eye will be able to produce sharper images and discern visual details that were only previously seen as a blur.

STAAR ICL™

The STAAR ICL™, newly approved by the FDA, is a procedure for patients who are 21 and older with moderate to severe myopia. A small incision is made in the eye and the ICL is gently inserted behind the iris, in front of the natural crystalline lens. The implant acts as a permanent contact lens, correcting nearsightedness.

ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® intraocular lens uses a new form of technology called apodized diffractive optics to provide cataract surgery patients with enhanced near, intermediate, and distant vision. Previous replacement lenses only improved distance vision, which meant that any activities performed up-close required the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses.

ReZoom™ Intraocular Lens

Another excellent option available to those suffering from cataracts is the ReZoom™ intraocular lens. By diffusing light across five optical regions, the ReZoom™ IOL improves near, intermediate, and distance vision. A study conducted in Europe revealed that 93 percent of patients who received the ReZoom™ lens never or only periodically had to rely on corrective eyewear.

Through the implantation of an intraocular lens, Boca Raton area residents suffering from cataracts, myopia or other visual defects now have access to crisper, clearer vision again. Contact the Cohen Laser and Vision Center today for more information about intraocular lens implants or to schedule a complimentary evaluation with renowned ophthalmologist, Dr. G. Richard Cohen.

Crystalens®

CrystalensAs people begin to age they begin to lose their ability to focus on objects that are close. They have developed a condition known as Presbyopia. By the time most adult reach their forties they require some sort of glasses to read menus, newspapers, mail and so much more. Later in life, people can begin to develop a more serious condition, cataracts. There is new technology that can help those who suffer from both presbyopia and cataracts: Crystalens.

Crystalens® is an accommodating intraocular lens that, unlike a standard IOL, can treat both a person’s cataracts and presbyopia. Crystalens not only treats your cataracts, but can also help you to rely less on your glasses. It does so by recreating accommodation similar to your eye’s natural lens. The unique Crystalens can decrease or eliminate the use of glasses for most activities including: reading a book, working on the computer, and driving a car. Crystalens was modeled after the human eye. Like the natural lens, it uses the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects in the environment at all distances. Crystalens has the ability to adjust rapidly to your visual needs.

Cataract and Presbyopia surgery is one of the most widely performed surgeries in the world. Crystalens is implanted during standard outpatient cataract surgery. The cataract procedure is quick and simple in that it takes about 15 minutes to complete. The procedure typically starts with eye numbing drops and a micro seal being made at the edge of the cornea. The natural lens is gently washed away and Crystalens is implanted. Crystalens can be implanted quickly and without the patient feeling anything. Most patients will return for a follow-up visit the day after surgery to make sure the procedure went right. The healing period is usually very short. Most patients are able to pursue normal activities almost immediately after surgery. If you are like most patients who have crystalens, you will be able to see clearly again.

FDA Clinical Trial Information

  •  98.4% of patients implanted with crystalens in both eyes could pass a driver's test without glasses
  •  100% could see intermediate (24" to 30") without glasses, the distance for most of life's activities
  •  98.4% could see well enough to read the newspaper and the phone book without glasses.
  •  Some patients did require glasses for some tasks after implantation of the crystalens
  •  Significantly more patients implanted with a crystalens (88.4%) could see better at all distances then patients implanted with a standard IOL (35.9%)

NearVisionSM CK®

Our medical director, Dr. G. Richard Cohen, was among the first refractive specialists in the United States to offer Conductive Keratoplasty® (CK®). This procedure was designed to correct presbyopia, a condition that commonly prevents people over the age of 40 from seeing nearby objects clearly. NearVisionSM CK® uses radio frequency (RF) energy to painlessly reshape the cornea. Because it is non-invasive, NearVisionSM CK® is associated with fewer complications than other refractive procedures. The safety and efficacy of using RF energy is reflected in the fact that other areas of medicine, including cancer treatment, back surgery, and cardiovascular therapy, also employ this technique.

If you would like more information about any of the state-of-the-art procedures we offer, including NearVisionSM CK®, PRK, and intraocular lens implantation, contact our laser vision correction center in the South Florida area of Boca Raton, near Fort Lauderdale. We offer free evaluations to all of our patients, and will be sure that you receive all of the information you need to make an informed, confident decision about laser vision correction.

PRK

The Cohen Laser and Vision Center proudly offers PRK in addition to intraocular lens implantation, IntraLase®, and other laser vision correction procedures. South Florida residents of Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale who are not good candidates for LASIK may be well-suited for PRK because the procedure does not require the creation of a corneal flap. PRK is a procedure that has been effectively used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism since 1995. Using an excimer laser or a gentle brush, the outer surface of the cornea is removed in order to allow the underlying tissue to be corrected. The cornea is then carefully sculpted so that it can properly focus light. After receiving PRK treatment, a majority of patients often experience 20/20 vision.
