Highly Myopic Patients
The Visian ICL…A New HOPE

If you are a highly myopic patient you have probably been to see an eye doctor quite a few times. You have probably also realized that LASIK eye surgery is not the best option either. Dr. Richard Cohen is one of a select few eye surgeons in South Florida that can insert the new Visian ICL also called the Implantable Collamer Lens. Collamer Lens), created by STAAR® Surgical Company, is a phakic intraocular lens (IOL) for the treatment of myopia and other refractive errors. Dr. Cohen is the Boca Raton Visian ICL expert that can help you with high myopia. If you have been struggling with thick glasses and poor distance vision please call us to find out if this vision correction option would be right for you. Patients seeking the Visian ICL in Ft. Lauderdale or the south florida area are encouraged to come into our office for a consultation.

About Visian ICL

The Visian ICL is a long lasting solution for refractive error. Through its myopia treatment, the Visian ICL offers excellent quality of vision.

The Visian ICL Advantages

  • Quality of Vision – The Visian ICL produces not only improved visual acuity, but also excellent visual quality. Many patients experience the "Wow" factor when they experience the immediate improvement in the quality of their vision.
  • Biocompatibility – Collamer, the 100 percent pure collagen copolymer lens material of the Visian ICL, is not viewed as a foreign object by the body's immune system. Versatility – The Visian ICL offers a wider treatment range for myopia than LASIK and PRK procedures.
  • Simplicity – Unlike traditional contact lenses, once the Visian ICL is implanted in the eye, there is no additional maintenance needed.
  • Lens Placement – The placement of the Visian ICL makes the lens invisible to the patient and any observer.
  • Removable – The Visian ICL was designed to be permanently placed in the eye. However, the lens can be removed if a patient's vision changes or if it otherwise needs to be removed or replaced.

What Happens During the Visian ICL surgery?

Prior to the Visian ICL eye surgery, an ophthalmic eye surgeon will make two microscopic holes in the iris. Your eye will be numbed with a light, topical or local anesthetic. Once the eye is numbed the surgeon will make 2 side port incisions and one main temporal incision that is critical to the insertion process. Next the surgeon will insert the ICL through the main temporal incision and place the lens behind the iris and in front of the crystalline lens. This insertion procedure is typically performed one eye at a time. There is very little discomfort and normally no pain associated with the procedure. Some drops or perhaps oral medication may be prescribed and a visit is usually scheduled the day after surgery. Patients will be advised to arrange for someone to drive them to and from surgery.

Are you a Candidate?

Individuals who suffer from extreme nearsightedness will have a solution for their poor vision. The ICL provides an opportunity to those individuals who are not candidates for LASIK eye surgery. Some people cannot have LASIK for reasons ranging from high prescriptions to thin corneas. The ICL will now give these patients the opportunity to experience the same lifestyle change that LASIK has brought to millions.

You're likely a good candidate for ICL if:

You have extreme to moderate nearsightedness
You have thin corneas and are not a LASIK candidate
You have a history of dry eye
You have large pupils

STAAR ICL™

The STAAR ICL™, newly approved by the FDA, is a procedure for patients who are 21 and older with moderate to severe myopia. A small incision is made in the eye and the ICL is gently inserted behind the iris, in front of the natural crystalline lens. The implant acts as a permanent contact lens, correcting nearsightedness.

Verisyse™ Phakic Intraocular Lens

Implantation of the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is a procedure intended for patients 21 years and older who suffer from moderate to severe cases of myopia. After an incision is made in the eye, the intraocular lens is gently inserted and attached to the iris. With the new lens in place, the eye will be able to produce sharper images and discern visual details that were only previously seen as a blur.
